Case Study:A Family Garden

“This project was developed for a family of young professionals requiring multifunctional space that could grow with their needs over time.”

“The design brief included some ‘must-‘haves’: lawn space for their children, a work from home office, larger raised vegetable beds & outdoor dining space for entertaining guests.

“I enjoy the challenge of balancing beauty and functionality in my designs. Its so rewarding to create gardens that not only look great but are ecologically sensitive & require minimal adaptation over time.”

Gardens are never blank canvasses & good design relies on detailed understanding of a garden’s strengths & opportunities. Site surveys like the one pictured here are blueprints that document the precise measurements & layout of a garden as well as any permanent or important features.

“I combine this with a site analysis report that considers climatic & local factors such as prevailing winds or busy nearby roads, noting anything that could impact the final design”

“Once the garden is surveyed, a project brief is agreed & design work can begin.”

“Shapework is a key starting point – I experiment with shapes & patterns at different scales which become the backbone of my design. I use different design inspirations for each and every project, that’s what makes my final product completely unique.”

“The design inspiration for this project was the ‘Antikythera’ mechanism – an ancient clockwork mechanism. I used the interconnected shapes of the mechanism as my inspiration because, much like cogs in a machine, this family garden had multiple areas that needed to work in harmony.”

“With a framework in place I use the design brief to flesh out specific ideas. I find that curating mood boards & sharing these with my clients is a fantastic way of generating ideas & refining concepts in a colourful & playful way.”

“Mood boards are often the first visual representations a client receives, so it’s really important that they communicate the right message about the direction the design is taking.”

“Here I was exploring ideas for underplanting birch trees along a boundary line to gently screen the garden from prevailing winds & prying eyes, without completely obscuring views over the distant countryside.”

“The master layout plan consolidates all of these technical & creative processes into a blueprint detailing the precise layout of the new garden’s features, plus specific material & product choices.”

This document is used by landscape builders along with any lighting plans & construction specification documents to build the garden.”

“In this image you can see how the shapework evolved into distinct spaces orbiting a central lawn. These areas are linked by a connecting path that pivots around a circular water feature that acts as a centrepiece visible from the seating areas.”

The placement of the lawn at the centre of the garden was a deliberate design choice to symbolise the place of children & family values at the heart of the client’s household.”

“3D visuals are useful for depicting ideas at different scales. Here I’m using a collage technique to illustrate how an existing flower bed & redbrick wall could be enhanced with additional planting to create a scheme with contrasting shapes and colours.”

This 3D image depicts views from the boundary towards the proposed garden office. This showcases a delightful ‘walk to work’ along treelined paths that are underplanted with vibrant shrubs and flowers.

Note the living ‘green’ roof atop the studio. Viewed from the upper floors of the client’s house, the green roof seamlessly blends the new office structure into a patchwork quilt of surrounding fields. This is a deliberate nod to the countryside location of the property & this attention to detail is so important in good design.

“Here’s an aerial view of the design showing how I developed the initial pencil drawing into a colourful portrayal of the client’s new garden.

“As you drag the slider from left to right observe how some of the ideas evolved. For example, the layout of raised vegetable beds at the bottom of the image changed over time ,as did the density & placement of trees along the boundary.”

Design Process

Garden design involves four stages. Philip believes that strong working relationships achieve the best results, so he regularly consults with clients at each stage of the journey.

Consultation

Understanding your vision

Philip begins the process with a friendly chat to understand your dreams and aspirations for your garden.

Do you love entertaining? Prefer a relaxing oasis? Do you need a child-friendly space?

Following the initial conversation Philip will provide a questionnaire that’s designed to understand your needs in more detail.

Discussing your lifestyle

Philip will discuss how you intend to use the garden, what activities are most important, and how much maintenance you’re comfortable with.

Evaluating your budget

It’s really important to have a realistic discussion about your budget at an early stage so that Philip can tailor his services to meet your financial goals.

Site Survey & Analysis

Measuring & mapping your garden

Once the scope of the project is agreed detailed measurements will be taken of your garden, noting all the important features.

In some cases this will be undertaken by a third-party contractor. Philip will advise the best approach based on your particular outdoor space.

Environmental analysis

Philip will analyse factors like sunlight patterns, soil quality, slopes, and any existing structures to build a complete picture.

Identifying opportunities & challenges

Philip will highlight areas of your garden with great potential and pinpoint any limitations to keep in mind.

Concept Design Development

Initial sketches

Philip will develop initial design ideas with rough sketches giving you a sense of the overall layout options.

Refining the concept

Philip will work with you to fine-tune the concept, ensuring it aligns with your vision, functional requirements, and budget.

Presenting the concept

A visual representation of the initial concept will be shared with you, which may include 2D or 3D plans & mood boards.

Sourcing materials

Specific materials will be recommended for your hardscaping elements, like stone, pavers, and decking, to ensure harmony with your design vision.

Master Plan Creation

Detailed drawings

Once the concept is agreed a detailed master plan will be created to scale. This plan will encompass all the elements of your new garden, including hardscaping, softscaping, water features, furniture and lighting.

Planting plans

Working with your preferences, Philip will select a beautiful and sustainable plant palette, then create a planting plan that shows their exact placement, quantities, and spacing.
